Most people assume that once you make it into a doctor’s office, you’re in good hands.
For many disabled people, that’s where some of the hardest experiences begin.
In this week’s episode of Discovering Beauty, I share my own experiences navigating the healthcare system as a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy. From being underestimated and talked down to, to encountering inaccessible offices and medical professionals who simply didn’t listen, this episode explores the ways disability bias can shape the care we receive—and the lasting impact it has.
This isn’t a story about blaming every doctor. I’ve also met remarkable healthcare professionals whose compassion changed my life. It’s about understanding the difference that empathy, respect, and truly listening can make.
If you’ve ever felt dismissed by a medical professional, cared for someone with a disability, or wondered what healthcare looks like from the patient’s perspective, I hope this conversation offers insight—and maybe even starts a few conversations of your own.
After you listen, I’d love to hear your experiences in the comments. Have you ever felt unseen by the healthcare system? What made the difference when someone finally listened?
Thank you for being part of this growing community. Together, we’re discovering beauty in the stories that too often go untold.
